Back in 2004, XFM and the annoyingly ubiquitous Christian O’Connell launched a competition to find the UK’s best school rock band. For the most part, the middle class kids who could afford the best kit got through with pedestrian covers of Green Day and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers (I believe the winning band actually performed a version of Don’t Speak by No Doubt. Go figure).

But one entry stood out – a 13 year old from North London who called himself ‘Ye Olde Fighting Cocks’. His home-made and terrifying version of Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes was never going to win, simply because it was too good, too rude and too rock for Rock School.

The recording has since disappeared from XFM’s site and there is no other copy of the song on the internet that I can find… until now. Just don’t ask me where I got it from.
